Commissioner Of Public Health Dr. Michael Mendoza Steps Down

Dr. Mendoza will focus on future opportunities reflecting his passion for public health and our community, County Executive Bello thanks him for his service and commitment to the community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Michael Mendoza today announced he is concluding his service as Monroe County Commissioner of Public Health. Dr. Mendoza has served as Commissioner of Public Health since 2016. The County is grateful for his service.

The County will conduct a search for Dr. Mendoza’s replacement and is looking forward to the opportunity to recruit and interview leaders in the public health industry for this important role. Beginning today and until such time that a replacement is selected, Dr. Marielena Velez de Brown, the current Deputy Commissioner of Public Health, will serve as Acting Commissioner of Public Health.

County Executive Adam Bello thanks Dr. Mendoza for his 7 years of service and for leadership during the COVID-19 emergency. Monroe County is renowned for its excellence in health care and research and the County Executive looks forward to recruiting a talented new Commissioner of Public Health.

Dr. Mendoza thanks the County Executive and County administration for their dedication to public health initiatives and support over the past four years.

Dr. Mendoza said, “I wish the best for all the dedicated staff in the Department of Public Health and I am certain that the department will continue to be successful.”
